My partner, best friend and soul mate of 19 years, Richard Bessette, was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer on January 11, 2013. We decided to treat this aggressively and scheduled the surgery to remove the 7 cm tumor on January 21. Last Saturday, nearly 1,300 people ran in support of colon cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and advocates at the Arizona State Capitol District in underwear-themed outfits in our 6th annual Undy 5000 5K Run/Walk. Even the Phoenix Suns Gorilla came out sporting banana print boxers, and was wildly popular with participants and their families.
The Undy 5000 costume contest was a hit, showcasing some fun and elaborate “undy” ensembles. Nolan the Colon, the Central Arizona Chapter’s giant inflatable colon, was a hot spot for photo opportunities during the event. Read more

In 2006, Kelly Rider-Williams, a 26 year-old Dallas resident, was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. High school geography teacher by day and activist by night, Kelly was determined to raise awareness about this disease. Despite the grueling chemotherapy and radiation, Kelly continued teaching, started her own colon cancer jewelry line and led the charge to bring the Colon Cancer Alliance’s signature event, the Undy 5000 5K Run/Walk, to the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Underwear-themed outfits filled the streets of Walk of Fame Park on August 17th as more than 400 colon cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and advocates participated in Music City’s 2nd annual Undy 5000 5K Walk/Run. Read more

Stronger than the Storm. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, this phrase has been a rallying cry for residents of New Jersey as they’ve fought back against the tough hand Mother Nature dealt them last October. On July 20, we found out firsthand what Stronger than the Storm really means.
That morning, Undy 5000 participants (and the sun!) were out in full force in Long Branch, New Jersey; nothing was stopping these folks from carrying on with the event, which has become a yearly tradition on the Jersey Shore. With wide smiles and colorful undies galore, Long Branch welcomed the Undy 5000 back with open arms. Read more
