Participants Needed: Healthy Weight Loss Study

Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health is seeking participants for their Healthy Weight Loss for Cancer Survivors Study, an exercise and diet weight loss program for female colon cancer survivors.

  • Are you a female stage I-III colon or rectal cancer survivor?
  • Are you overweight and want to lose weight?

  • Do you exercise less than two and a half hours per week?
  • Are you postmenopausal?
  • Do you have access to the Internet?

  • Do you live in or around any of these areas?
    • Tucson, AZ – University of Arizona Medical Center
    • Wichita, KS – Wichita area medical centers

    • Chicago, IL – Loyola University

    • Kansas City, KS – University of Kansas
    • Royal Oak, MI – Beaumont area medical centers

    • New York, NY – New York Presbyterian Hospital at Columbia University
    • Greenville, SC – Greenville area medical centers

    • Seattle, WA – Swedish Medical Center

    • Vallejo, CA – Kaiser Permanente Northern California

If yes, you may be eligible to participate in a diet and exercise weight loss program for colon cancer survivors!

What would you have to do? 
If you participate in this study, here’s what you’d have to do:

  •  Receive nutrition counseling over the phone for 12 months
  • Receive membership at a local Curves® club for 12 months at no cost.
  • Go to 5 clinic visits over the course of the study.
  • Have 3 fasting blood draws.
  • Complete online surveys and telephone interviews every 6 months for 1 
year.

    W would love to do this however I am in Lancaster Ohio I am a survivor of stage III rectal cancer I am post menopausal if anything comes up like this in the Lancaster area I would definitely participate

    I am not in those areas, but if they happen to expand to Nashville, TN, I am available. I am concerned about my weight gain, but I know I have not been able to exercise due to recovery period. I thought I was the only one who had gained weight. Good to hear I am not alone. Good luck with the study.

    I’m a survivor a two time survivor. I’m and post menopausal. However I live n Las Vegas. Very interested in this! If you open a new study and include Las Vegas please please add me! I was stage 3 colorectal.

    Royal Oak is about 2 &1/2 hours away from my home. Not sure if this would be too far to participate. I live close to Grand Rapids, MI. I am interested in losing weight and I recently had colon cancer surgery.

    I am still waiting for chemo, I did not have insurance so did not get it right away. My insurance started on 4/1/14 so waiting for appointment to get it started. Surgery in Dec.13 Stage 11 Colon Cancer. I have weight issues and have tried to lose weight while waiting for Chemo but have not had much luck. I am on Warfarin and have to limit my Vitamin K vegy’s which is what I need to help be healthy for cancer from what I read. I would love to have assistance with my weight loss is I qualify.

    I live near Grand Rapids, MI but am willing to participate in this study. I was diagnosed with Appendix cancer – thought it might have spread to colon, so they removed half of colon. I have a right colectonmy. I will find out what stage I have if I am included in this study.

    Stage 1 colon cancer survivor (March 2014) and 2 year survivor of stage 2 Breast Cancer (April 2012).
