It’s a Family Thing: Relaying to Raise Awareness
Jose Valades lived a relatively normal life in Texas with his wife, Elena, and their two sons. But in June 2011, the Valades family changed forever; Elena was diagnosed with colon cancer. While the Valades family went through this extraordinarily trying ordeal, they received endless love and support from family, friends and those in their community.
It was through these acts of kindness that Jose drew strength, and he was ultimately motivated to turn this potentially negative situation into a positive family bonding experience. He entered his entire family in The Woodlands Marathon, a team relay marathon in The Woodlands, TX.
In addition to training for the race, Jose, Elena and their two sons, Leon and Jose, decided to add fundraising to their quest to make a difference in the colon cancer community. On March 2, 2013, the entire Valades family not only finished the relay marathon (including Elena, who’s proven to be pretty darn tough) but also raised more than $1,200 through their Blue Star Tribute page for the Colon Cancer Alliance!
Congratulations to the Valades family for all their hard work and positive attitude! You four rock! If you have an idea like the Valades’ and would like to turn it into a fundraiser, please contact Alison Ornitz at (202) 628-0123 ex. 109.
