To Screen or Not to Screen
I am writing as the CEO of the Colon Cancer Alliance. Every day we receive calls from people who are dying of colorectal cancer. They are dying for one simple reason—they weren't screened when they should have been.
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States, killing more people than breast cancer and AIDS combined. Ironically, it is also almost completely preventable through screening.
Patients and their families are passionate about screening. When your family is ripped apart by a cancer that could have been prevented by a simple test, you tend to get a bit vocal about the issue. So across this country volunteers for our organization are working tirelessly to communicate one simple message: get screened.
Now I read that screening for prostate cancer may no longer be recommended. I understand the reasoning behind this recommendation. I also understand that this is one more barrier to getting people screened for cancer when those screenings can save tens of thousands of lives. We must not allow confusion about one kind of screening to dilute the critical message that everyone can reduce their risk of many common cancers—particularly colorectal cancer—through screening.

Colon cancer kills more than 600,000 people worldwide. To stop this deadly disease, doctors at the University of Pittsburgh are trying to think outside the box. Instead of focusing on traditional chemotherapy, they're looking at some things you wouldn't necessarily think of as cancer fighters -- vaccines and a virus.

August 26, 2008
Among patients with colorectal cancer, skin treatment beginning on the day prior to therapy with Vectibix® (panitumumab) significantly reduces skin side effects associated with Vectibix compared with skin treatment after side effects occur. These results were presented at the 10th World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer held in Spain in June 2008.

Genetic Factor in Colon Cancer Discovered
Voice of America
August 14, 2008
Researchers have discovered an abnormality in a gene that they have strongly linked to the development of inherited colon cancer, which may account for up to 20 percent of cases of colon cancer. As VOA's Jessica Berman reports, scientists believe the discovery could lead to a simple blood test to identify people susceptible to inherited colon cancer.
