Local Doctor Helps Boost Cancer Awareness in Buffalo
Buffalo Gastroenterology Associates helps bring giant inflatable colon to Buffalo for Undy 5000 5K
(March 18, 2014) Washington, DC – Thanks to the support of Buffalo Gastroenterology Associates, the Colon Cancer Alliance’s giant inflatable colon will be making another appearance at the 3rd annual Buffalo Undy 5000 5K Run/Walk.On April 26th, people of all ages will take to the streets of Delaware Park in their family-friendly, underwear-themed outfits to run or walk, raising awareness and funds to fight colon cancer.
But the Undy 5000 isn’t your typical 5K. Attendees have the rare opportunity to walk through the Colon Cancer Alliance’s larger-than-life inflatable colon exhibit, which helps create a dramatic visual by showing visitors the various stages of this disease.
Because of the generous sponsorship from Buffalo Gastroenterology Associates, this fan favorite will be on display at this year’s event as a way for participants to learn firsthand about how this disease looks and what risk factors they should have on their radars.
“One of my favorite parts of the event is inflating the colon exhibit and seeing how people are immediately drawn to it,” said Todd Setter, National Director of the Undy 5000 series. “It’s such a great way to teach people about the disease. The Undy 5000 is all about drawing attention, increasing screening rates and, ultimately, saving lives. Thanks to Buffalo GI’s support, we’ll be able to have an even larger impact. And better yet, where else can you walk through a giant colon?”
The physicians of Buffalo Gastroenterology Associates are eager to get people talking and taking action to fight this disease. They understand that colon cancer can be an uncomfortable subject but urge everyone to know their family history, pay attention to their bodies, and make sure to undergo appropriate screenings.
A fun twist to a serious topic, the Undy 5000 is sparking much-needed conversations. Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet it is still the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. In the Buffalo area alone, colon cancer takes the lives of more than three people each week. People may not want to talk about “that” part of the body, but talking about it just might save a life.
This year’s Undy 5000 kick-off party, Buffalo’s Blue Bash, will take place on Thursday, March 20 at Artisan Kitchens and Baths. Join Buffalo Gastroenterology and other event supporters and participants for this awareness event. Admission is free, open to the public, and will include live music, food and drink. More information is available on the Buffalo Undy 5000 website.
