2nd Annual San Diego Undy 5000 5K Run A Great Success
Threat of Rain Doesn’t Dampen Spirits of Colon Cancer Runners
San Diego, CA (March 21) – The Colon Cancer Alliance’s 2nd Annual San Diego Undy 5000 5K run was held on Saturday, March 19. More than 600 people wearing Undy 5000 boxers participated in the event to help bring greater awareness to colon cancer, the 2nd leading cause of cancer death in the United States.
“The second annual Undy 5000 5K in San Diego was phenomenal,” said Andrew Spiegel, CEO of the Colon Cancer Alliance. “We had twenty-one survivors in attendance who were honored in a special ceremony as well as the largest team we’ve ever had called the Blue Ribbon Bootie, with 101 boxer clad members. And, to top it off, San Diego supporters helped us raise more than $81,000!”
The Undy 5000 series, created by the Colon Cancer Alliance and held in cities across the nation, is designed to promote awareness and education about colon cancer. The event stresses the importance of timely colon cancer screening, and provides valuable information for those already affected by the disease. The American Cancer Society estimates that 142,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year. Through recommended screenings, this cancer can be caught early when treatment is most effective — or even prevented altogether when pre-cancerous polyps are detected and removed.
Sponsors of the event included Dulcolax, California Colon Cancer Control Program, UC San Diego Health System, California Colorectal Cancer Coalition, the California Dialogue on Cancer, The Endoscopy Center, the ASCRS (American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons), Genentech BioOncology, Salix Pharmaceuticals, Inc and Amgen Oncology.
