Unique Event Puts Spotlight on Colon Cancer
Sonoma County Community Rallies to Fight this All-Too-Common Disease
(April 3, 2014) Santa Rosa, CA – People of all ages are taking to the streets in an unconventional way for the Colon Cancer Alliance’s Undy 5000 5K Run/Walk. On April 12 at 9:00 am, participants will be running & walking through Santa Rosa in the inaugural Sonoma County Undy 5000 wearing their family-friendly, underwear-themed outfits. It may look a bit unusual, but this event not only raises eyebrows, but also awareness and funds to fight colon cancer.
The Undy 5000 isn’t your typical 5K. Instead of a race day t-shirt, participants receive a pair of Undy 5000 boxer shorts to bring attention to the area of the body affected by colon cancer. If that’s not unique enough, attendees have the rare opportunity to walk through the Colon Cancer Alliance’s larger-than-life inflatable colon exhibit which helps create a dramatic visual by showing its visitors the various stages of this disease.
The Undy 5000 provides a one-of-a-kind experience, allowing hundreds of people who have been affected by colon cancer to come together as a community. This event honors survivors in attendance and also takes a moment to remember those who have lost their battle. Whether you are an avid runner, a survivor or are supporting someone affected by this disease, the Undy 5000 provides a morning of inspiration and encouragement while making colon cancer a topic that is OK to talk about.
But the Colon Cancer Alliance isn’t all talk; they take it one step further through their local partnerships. Funds raised through the Undy 5000 not only support local community health partners, but also help fund critical national prevention, research and patient support initiatives.
“We know this is going to be a great first-year event for the Undy 5000,” said Todd Setter, National Director of the Undy 5000 series. “We really wanted to bring the Undy to a part of the country we had not yet reached, and we hope we can spread the word about preventing and treating colon cancer here in Sonoma County! Through the success of this year’s event, we’ll be able to serve even more individuals than in the past, and helping these people is part of what makes this event so significant”
Sutter Health has partnered with the Colon Cancer Alliance to bring the Undy 5000 to Sonoma County. Lizzie Moore, Oncology Services Coordinator at Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation in Santa Rosa, said “Sutter Health is very proud to be a sponsor this event. We hope that the community will join us for this fun run and learn more about preventing colon cancer with early detection!
A fun twist to a serious topic, the Undy 5000 is sparking much needed conversations. Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet it is still the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. Colon cancer personally affects 1 out of 20 people. People may not want to talk about “that” part of the body, but talking about it just might save a life.
