Boxers and Briefs Hit Buffalo Streets for 5K Event
Buffalo Community Runs in Undies for a Cause You Should Get Behind
Buffalo, NY – April 14, 2014 – Turn your underwear into outerwear for the upcoming Buffalo Undy 5000 5K Run/Walk. On April 26th, participants will hit the pavement in Delaware Park donning family-friendly, underwear-themed outfits. Annually, the Undy 5000 event benefits the Colon Cancer Alliance, but is also appreciated in the Buffalo community as a cheeky way to raise awareness and funds to support a great cause.
The Undy 5000 isn’t just your everyday 5K. Instead of receiving a race day t-shirt, participants will receive a stylish pair of boxer shorts and will have the opportunity to take a stroll through a larger-than-life inflatable colon. This creative and educational inflatable is a unique way for visitors to understand the disease.
A fun twist on a serious topic, the Undy 5000 is sparking much-needed conversations. From the moment you arrive, you will become both amused and enthused by the expressive attire. Some participants will sport their favorite pair of underwear, while others will dress as Santa Claus, a superhero or simply as a runner. Whatever your style, this is the place to express it.
In Buffalo, colon cancer has left a bigger gap than some may think; there have been 527 diagnoses and 189 colon cancer deaths in the past year alone. Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet it is still the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. More than 140,000 Americans will be diagnosed with colon cancer in 2014, and more than 50,000 will die from this disease.
This year’s Buffalo Undy 5000 supports both local and national efforts. Locally, funds will go to the Independent Health Foundation’s Good for the Neighborhood program to provide health and wellness programs to Western New York communities with limited access to health care. Nationally, funds will support prevention, research and patient support initiatives at the Colon Cancer Alliance.
“People who attend this event have a great time and get an important message,” said Todd Setter, National Director of the Undy 5000 series. “If this event encourages even one person to get screened – then our mission is accomplished.”
