Royal Oak Undy 5000 Makes Big Impact Against Colon Cancer
Royal Oak, MI (August 3, 2010) – The Royal Oak Undy 5000 5K run took place on Saturday, July 31st on the William Beaumont Hospital grounds to help bring greater awareness to colon cancer, the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States.
“Royal Oak was a wonderful place for the Undy 5000,” said Andrew Spiegel, CEO of the Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA). “We raised almost $50,000, which will help support and build the CCA’s innovative patient support and public awareness programs. In addition, a percentage of the funds raised will go to the Beaumont Hospital Colon and Rectal Department to promote screenings, colon cancer research, and help the underserved.”
The Undy 5000 was created by the CCA and is held in different cities across the country throughout the year. The goal of the event is to educate the public about colon cancer, promote screenings, and to get people talking about this deadly, but preventable, disease.
People came from as far as three hours away to take part in the event. One participating team is now on an Undy tour, recently completing the Grand Rapids Undy and setting their sights on upcoming Undy 5000 runs. Most fundraisers became involved with the event because they either lost a relative to colon cancer or know someone suffering from the disease.
Regional sponsors of this event included William Beaumont Hospital, Michigan Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Oakland Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Asacol, Troy Gastroenterology, United Physicians, Ferndale Laboratories, Gastrointestinal Specialists and the Beaumont Pharmacy. Food and beverage sponsors of the event included Chicken Shack and The Peppermill Cafe. National sponsors of the race series include Amgen Oncology, ASCRS (American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Bristol Myers Squibb, Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Genentech, MITA (Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance) and Salix Pharmaceuticals.
