This month we are excited to announce that our Blue Hope Partnership Program (BHPP) Partner of the Month is the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia! The Abramson Cancer Center got its start in 1973, and has continued to lead the way over the last four decades. Since its conception, the Abramson Cancer Center has continuously been awarded the prestigious designation of Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. Read more

We recently collaborated with the online patient community Smart Patients on an empathy-building program called #ColorectalCancer1day. Together we matched patients and caregivers affected by colorectal cancer (“teachers”) with researchers and clinicians from Kaiser Permanente who wanted to learn more about what one day with colorectal cancer feels like (“learners”). We’re now sharing the highlights from this learning experience with a broader audience.
A cancer diagnosis is never given to a single person – it’s given to a family. Often, family members are the primary means of support that balance out the mental and emotional struggles that come with battling cancer. But what of our #ColorectalCancer1day participants? Did our learners find a different perspective on colorectal cancer after further considering how siblings, spouses, parents, and caregivers may be called upon to support different aspects of cancer care like treatment, transportation, and empathy? On May 25, 1961, President Kennedy challenged America’s best and brightest to put a man on the moon within the decade. The result was the successful Apollo mission eight years later in 1969.
With this as the inspiration, President Obama in the January State of the Union Address announced the Cancer Moonshot – a decade long initiative to cure cancer. This month the Blue Ribbon Panel for the Cancer Moonshot announced ten recommendations, forming the research blueprint for the mission. Read more
