Statement from Colon Cancer Alliance CEO Michael Sapienza on AHCA assessment by the CBO

Today the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) provided an assessment of what will happen if the American Health Care Act (AHCA) becomes law. The synopsis provides negative foreshadowing, especially in the cancer community, with statistics including: 51 million Americans will be uninsured by 2026, a dramatic increase in out-of-pocket healthcare costs, and a steep decrease in access to life-saving treatments and care. Kendra’s Story: From Newlywed to Newly Diagnosed to Undy Rockstar Volunteer

Still a young newlywed when she started experiencing symptoms, Kendra Mitchell finally saw a doctor after admitting she was having issues to her husband. Thanks to his encouragement, they were able to catch her cancer early and she has been NED since 2014. Since her diagnosis, she has gone all-in for the upcoming Denver Undy Run/Walk as one of our rockstar volunteer Undy Engagement Committee members. She shared her story with us as well as why she’s excited for the race in June. Read more

Support the Donald Payne Sr. Colorectal Cancer Detection Act of 2017

Last month, after repeated encouragement from my wife, I went in for my annual physical.  Beforehand my doctor had me stop at the lab for blood tests which showed that my cholesterol was a bit high and the doctor gave me some dietary tips to get it in line.  I did not request to have my cholesterol checked, it’s just a routine part of an annual physical.  Turns out the blood tests screen for a whole host of factors that can help prevent serious health conditions from heart disease to diabetes.  Read more

Cancer Patients Deserve Better Coverage

Today the Colon Cancer Alliance joins with hundreds of other patient advocacy groups and medical professional associations in opposing the American Health Care Act (AHCA) that is currently under consideration in the House of Representatives.

The Alliance calls on Congress to discontinue debate on this bill.  Instead Congress must engage with the broad health community to draft legislation that meaningfully improves access to care by increasing the number of Americans who have health insurance. Read more
